Apple Materials Engineering Product Design team is dedicated to creating and optimizing these materials. We influence and enable innovative designs across all Apple product lines year after year. We work with the utmost attention to detail, directly impacting the design of products that millions of people around the world love. As a Materials Engineer within the Product Design organization, you will create and drive the environmental path for alloy materials in support of Apple’s ambitious environmental goals. This position is part of the Environmental and Materials Management (E&MM) group within Materials PD. E&MM drives the environmental roadmap for alloys, polymers, glasses and ceramics used across Apple hardware products. As part of E&MM, your aim will be the successful development and execution of projects that reduce the carbon impact of alloys. You will collaborate closely with other Apple teams and suppliers to identify decarbonization opportunities; push development of decarbonization technologies, processes, and materials; and supporting materials engineers evaluating and qualifying lower-carbon impact materials. This position will require a high level of autonomy and effective communication as well as the management of multiple projects in parallel.

Description

Imagine the impact you'll have by developing solutions to decarbonize the alloy materials used across Apple hardware products! In this position, you will partner with Apple teams, Apple suppliers, and outside technology companies to identify and develop the technologies needed to decarbonize materials. These decarbonization opportunities will be identified by using lifecycle assessment techniques coupled with an understanding of Apple materials, products, and supply chains. We will look to you for decarbonization technology ideation, testing and evaluation, selection, validation and scaling to intercept with product roadmaps. Are you ready?

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/MS/PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in relevant industry
  • High attention to detail, fastidious management of large quantities of details, solution-driven mindset to manage projects to successful completion
  • Demonstrated ability to independently drive multiple projects, setting priorities and deliver results
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, providing technical expertise and updates on project milestones

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong materials fundamentals in extractive metallurgy and process-structure-properties-performance relationships
  • Knowledge of lifecycle assessment (LCA) methods, industrial ecology, and carbon foot-printing
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to use statistical tools and techniques
  • Experience in metal production technology or process development (e.g. beneficiation, smelting, refining, recycling)
  • Experience conducting or interpreting lifecycle assessments for carbon foot-printing purposes

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $147,400 and $220,900, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
