Julian Walker is an Associate Professor of Materials Science in the Functional Materials and Materials Chemistry Research Group (FACET) of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Julian has a background in ceramics and specialization in functional materials. His research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of functional materials for electromechanical, electronic and thermal energy applications. The materials featured in his research range between metal oxide ceramics, polycrystalline thin films, supramolecular and ionic plastic crystals. Julian has a PhD from the University of New south Wales, Australia, and Postdocs from Jozef Stefan Institute, Slovenia, Pennsylvania State University, USA and NTNU, Norway, where he became a faculty member in 2021. In 2024 Julian was awarded the Sten and Ingrid Ahrlands prize from the Royal physiographic Society of Lund, Sweden, and in 2025 the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control Society’s Ferroelectric Young Investigator Award. Julian is the secretary of the Norwegian Ceramic society and the Norwegian Chemical Society’s Functional Inorganic Materials working group (NKS FUM). Julian became an Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee member for the European Ceramic society in 2025.
