02/2023 - Report on AIMed Winter School “Emerging antimicrobial biomaterials for orthopaedic applications”
The 2023 AIMed ECerS Winter School “Emerging antimicrobial biomaterials for orthopaedic applications” took place from 22nd to 23rd February 2023 at the Hotel Academia of Zagreb in Croatia.
The School focused on the Emerging antimicrobial biomaterials for orthopaedic applications. The 2-day programme provided a multi-disciplinary and intersectoral training for Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) and for external postgraduate students and post-doctoral research fellows.
The programme included presentations from experts and leading researchers in the field.
The Winter school provided an enjoyable and productive opportunity to interact and meet with colleagues in the nice city of Zagreb.
12 internationally renowned scientists shared their experience in this topic: Prof. Anne Leriche, Prof. Albena Daskalova, Dr Stephen Gray, Prof. Fernando Albericio, Prof. Maria-Helena Fernandez, Prof. Silke Christiansen, Prof. Akis Agathopoulos, Prof. Sophie Cazalbou, Prof. David Grossin, Asst. Prof. Jiahua Jiang, Prof. Elina Meliou, Dr. sc. Bojan Macan.
There were 23 participants outside of the AIMed network coming from 13 countries (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, United Kingdom) and a total of 54 participants including the lecturers.
7 JECS Trust grant of 400 € were allowed to students outside of the AIMed network.
There were 24 posters presented during this School and thanks to the JECS Trust support a poster contest was organised. The 3 winners are:
- Marta Tavoni - Injectable strontium-doped apatitic bone cement with tunable antibacterial and antibiofilm ability
- Andrea Maorfoglia – 3D Printing of a sterile antimicrobial bioink
- Mohadeseh Zare – Anti microbial coating of metal surfaces using immobilized peptides

Why Crystal Structure Matters: Decoding the Performance of Calcium Phosphate Biomaterials
In the world of calcium phosphate biomaterials, crystal structure is often the silent driver behind a material’s success—or failure. Whether we are developing bone graft substitutes or studying bioceramic interactions at the tissue interface, understanding the underlying crystal lattice isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.
